What structured data is

Structured data describes your content in a machine-readable format so search engines can understand it precisely. The recommended syntax is JSON-LD, placed in a <script type="application/ld+json"> block using the schema.org vocabulary.

It rarely changes rankings directly, but it can earn rich results — stars, breadcrumbs, FAQ boxes — which improve click-through rates.

Types worth adding

Type Rich result
Article / BlogPosting Article enhancements
FAQPage FAQ rich results
HowTo Step-by-step (limited support)
Product + Offer Price, availability, reviews
LocalBusiness Local pack details
BreadcrumbList Breadcrumb trail
Organization Brand panel

Generate correct markup with the schema generator and its variants: FAQ, Article, Product.

A minimal Article example

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "Article",
  "headline": "How to Create an Invoice",
  "datePublished": "2026-09-16",
  "author": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Example" }
}

The golden rule: match visible content

Markup must reflect what a user actually sees on the page. Inventing ratings, reviews or FAQs that are not on the page is a spam violation and can trigger a manual action.

Validate everything

  • Test with the Rich Results Test.
  • Check the Schema Markup Validator.
  • Monitor Search Console → Enhancements for errors.

Common mistakes

  1. Fake aggregate ratings — the fastest route to a penalty. Do not invent review counts.
  2. FAQ markup for content that is not visible.
  3. Conflicting duplicates — multiple @type blocks saying different things.
  4. Missing required properties so the result never renders.
  5. Using deprecated types and expecting rich results.

Where to start

Add BreadcrumbList and Article markup first — they are low-risk and useful. Then add FAQPage where you genuinely answer questions, and Product for e-commerce.

Use the free generators to produce valid JSON-LD in seconds, then validate before publishing.
